The authorities in Zambia have appointed the country's defence minister,
Edgar Lungu, as acting president, amid ongoing concern for the health
of seventy-seven year-old President, Michael Sata. His office said he
had left the country on Sunday for a medical check-up. He has not been
seen in public since returning from the United Nations General Assembly
last month, where he failed to make a scheduled speech. Mr Sata was due
to preside over celebrations to mark fifty years of Zambia's
independence, this Friday.
