The authorities in southern Somalia have given
details about the fighting on Saturday during which the Islamist group,
al-Shabaab, seized control of a strategic island. The (Juba) regional
administration accused al-Shabaab of massacring civilians
when it seized control of Kudha island. It said seventy Islamists were
killed during the battle. For its part, al-Shabaab says its fighters had
killed sixty members of the regional militia, which is allied to the
federal government in Mogadishu. Before the latest assault, African
Union troops and Somali forces had pushed Al Shabaab out of several
towns in southern Somalia.
