Residents staged celebrations outside a court in
Bushenyi District on Wednesday after a hardcore criminal was sentenced
to 40 years in prison for aggravated robbery and attempted murder.
Nasur Gumisiriza, alias Rwamukyandara, committed
the offences in 2013 in Bushenyi Town. Prior to his arrest, there had
been various killings and robberies in Bushenyi, forcing residents to
close businesses and sleep as early as 7pm.
The investigations led to the arrest of Gumisiriza. In April 2015 he was committed to the High Court for trial.
Appearing before the High Court, Gumisiriza
pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and attempted murder. The trial was
presided over by Justice Duncan Gaswaga.
Prosecution said Gumisiriza, 25, on the night of
October 15, 2013 in Bushenyi Town attempted to murder Phiona Namanya,
Emily Kyobutungi, Jacqueline Nareeba and Katushabe Bibiana.
Gumisiriza also robbed Shs40,000 from Namanya and caused grievous bodily harm to all the victims.

Justice Gaswaga sentenced Gumisiriza to 15 years
in jail for aggravated robbery and 25 years for each of the four victims
he attempted to murder. “Since all the sentences equal to 115 years yet
all the offences were committed during the same transaction, it is
hereby ordered that all the said sentences should run concurrently,” the
judge said.
